Likovne besede

Magazine content description

Likovne besede - Artwords - magazine is the only national art periodical dealing with art and theory, continually published since 1985.

Up till 2010, Artwords was published in the form of two double issues per year, however, since the restructuring of state funding, the periodical is published in two single volumes annually, financially supported by the Slovenian Book Agency (JAK) until 2016. We are working to restore the former state of publication, since we cover a particular gap of writing about art in the Slovenian cultural arena.

The magazine is equipped with visual material in colour, with each issue including 120 pages on average. It is intended as a resource for all lovers and collectors of art, as well as visual artists, art theoreticians, art historians and art educators.

Each issue of Artwords magazine has a theme: Between Heaven and Earth; Arte-Fact?; Women in Art; Views upon Slovenian art, Art and Time; Dreams, Psychoanalysis and Art; Travelling; Exhibition; Colour, Some Shades; The Surplus Value of Art, etc.

The permanent sections of the periodical, Round Table and Interview, feature interviews with local and foreign visual artists, curators and theoreticians. Each round table is organized in-house, on the premises of the magazine or elsewhere.

We publish art criticism, essays, interpretations, theory, as well as notes by artists (diaries, reflections) and original pages by artists conceived specifically for the magazine.

The theoretical supplement, which has been published since 2004 as a special part of the magazine, includes texts from the field of the theory and history art, which have been translated and relate to the theme of each issue.

The texts and contents are prepared by the editorial team in collaboration with renowned experts for art, by national and international scope. Painter and printmaker Mojca Zlokarnik has been editor-in-chief since 2001. Curator and critic Petja Grafenauer has been providing additional support as editor since 2009.

The editors-in-chief and editors of Artwords in the past have included the painters Borko Tepina and Maksim Sedej Jr. (1985-1989), Borko Tepina (1989-1995), Milan Golob and Robert Lozar (1996- 2000), Mojca Zlokarnik and Andrej Brumen-Čop (2001-2002). Artist Alenka Pirman and art historian and director of SCCA-Ljubljana, Barbara Borčić, were the editors of Artwords in 1991. From 2003 to 2010, Nevenka Šivavec, curator and director of MGLC Ljubljana, acted as editor. Between 2003 and 2013, artist and theoretician Polona Tratnik, editor and critic Urška Jurman, critic and curator Petra Kapš, art historian and theorist Beti Žerovc, theoretician Mojca Puncer, as well as art historian Sara Živković, were all part of the editorial board. Painter and theoretician Jožef Muhovič has been preparing the Contributions to the Slovenian Dictionary of Art Terms for Artwords for many years now.
